Touching the Beloved Within: An Elul Course - Morning Cohort
Elul is the month before Rosh Hashanah. It is during this month that we look inside, taking account of our lives in preparation for the Ten Days of Awe; Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur.
According to the Kabbalists, Elul is a special time in that the energy of the Divine is very close to us, which allows us to breathe new life and possibility into ourselves. The word Elul itself expresses this sentiment. It is a Hebrew acronym of these words: “אֲנִ֤י לְדוֹדִי֙ וְדוֹדִ֣י לִ֔י” — “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li” — “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,” (Song of Songs 6:3).
What is the opportunity of seeing ourselves as the Beloved Divine Creator sees us? We can see ourselves as the beloved, with kindness, care and appreciation. As such, this unique month offers us dedicated time for personal acknowledgment, inquiry, prayer and practice to help us connect very deeply with the beloved within.
Together in this course we will make compassionate inquiries and discoveries about who we’ve been this year. We begin with self acknowledgment as a step to fortify our goodness and our belief in our capacity. Then we explore what we might like to release that has not served us this year. Finally, we inquire about what we might like to cultivate in the upcoming New Year. We will address this process in four areas:
Week 1: Our Relationship with Ourself
Week 2: Our Relationship with Others
Week 3: Our Relationship with the Planet/Creation
Week 4: Our Relationship with Source/The Divine
There will be a workbook provided with teachings, practices and space for your notes.
Sessions will be held virtually.

Renewing the Self: An Elul Arts Workshop
A Workshop with Mosaic Artist Gabrielle Rousso and Rabbi Robin Damsky
Each year we devote a month to preparation for the High Holidays. This is the month of Elul – an acronym in Hebrew for, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,” (Song of Songs). As we engage this month of self-reflection, what better place to begin with than focusing on caring for ourselves as the beloved?
In this workshop we will use song, music, text, conversation and writing to learn about Elul and prepare us to then design a mosaic art piece that will reflect our personal path of self-care and renewal. You will design this from an abundance of material options. Each piece will have its own shape, color, and texture, yet together the pieces you choose will create something whole and beautiful that represents you on your path.
All are welcome!

A New Jewish Story
“The stories we hold shape who we are now, and who we’re becoming. To create new stories, we must revisit the roots of our old stories and ask: What truths did they hold? What do they still ask of us today?
The Kabbalists taught us to read Torah not only in the letters — the “black fire” — but in the spaces between — the “white fire.” In those gaps lie openings for imagination, fresh perspectives, and new narratives.” - Kabbalah Experience
Delving into the primal story of the Garden of Eden, we explore the text and ask: Where does this story speak to us? Where do we take it for granted? At close range, what gaps does it have, or what questions does it bring forth? How can uncovering hidden truths affect how we understand this story and how we unfold in our lives? How can different understandings of this story evolve us into a new way of being in ourselves and in community?
Last spring I was honored to be a Kabbalah Center fellow exploring these questions and more about the Garden of Eden story. Alongside colleagues, over weeks of inquiry, we each found openings and new questions, and ultimately, a way to bring this text to others to continue to the journey.
Join me for our particular walk into the Gan Eden - the Garden of Eden - with its literal and mystical understandings and the possibilities it can bring into our lives.
At Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 Cornwallis Rd, Durham
Five Weeks: April 15, 22, 29, May 6 and 13
12:00-1:30 PM Eastern, Brown bag lunch
