Mindfulness Practice for Highly Sensitive/Neurodivergent People

Mindfulness Practice for Highly Sensitive/Neurodivergent People

A Mindfulness Course Incorporating the Seven Chakras

Are you:

  • Creative

  • Hypersensitive to stimuli – light, sound, specific foods, touch - whether from others or from fabrics on your skin, scents…

  • Finding yourself on a different sleep schedule than the average person

  • Seeing yourself as atypical or “out of the box”

  • Diagnosed as neurodivergent in one or more of the following areas: ADHD, ADD, OCD, ASD

  • High anxiety

  • One who experiences that traditional gender roles don’t fit who you are

  • Experiencing high stress from the last two years in Jewish/United States/world events

  • Feeling fear or grief over growing climate issues

This course is designed with you in mind.

In the last year I have been guided to two books that have changed my life: Divergent Mind and Unmasking Autism. They have opened me up to understand patterns from my early childhood – all the way back to before I could walk. I am now embracing myself as a highly sensitive person who has had little guidance or support in understanding how to navigate a world whose standard does not make space for my way of processing and understanding.

We may…

Express neurodivergence or increased sensitivity in our genetics. Or it may possibly be from ancestral trauma we carry. Alternately, it may be from trauma experienced in this life – emotional or physical – that has required a shift in the way we process and understand reality. Some of us are experiencing heightened sensitivity as a result of increasing tensions in our world. Regardless of where you fit in this continuum, Mindfulness Practice for Highly Sensitive / Neurodivergent People will address you where you are right now, offering you tools to balance yourself and navigate your life.

The Curriculum - Through the Chakras

My ten years as a teacher of mindfulness and meditation have taught me that people find different ways of accessing center. While for some it is through the breath, it is not uncommon that those who’ve been traumatized or feel highly sensitive may not find the breath a calming focus. For these individuals, another anchor may be needed to find balance.

Since the 1980s I have studied and offered workshops balancing energy through the chakras found in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. These energy centers correspond to nerve plexuses in our bodies and affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

This course will dive deeply into the seven chakras, each one associated with specific energies, colors, scents, sounds and tastes. You will practice and explore each chakra’s energy and its capacity for balance, healing, well being and growth. Upon completion of this course you will have seven entry points from which to design mindfulness practice that suits your needs and sensitivities.

Note: This course is not therapy nor is it intended to serve where therapy may be indicated.

POSTPONED TO 2026 - Who or What is God and What Does it Matter Anyway?

"Rabbi, I don't believe in God," I've often heard.

I respond: "Tell me about this God you don't believe in."

In every case, after hearing their description, I've honestly said, "I don't believe in that God either."

The Holy One, Havayah, Rock, El Shaddai, Shepherd, Merciful One, Source, Ein Sof-Without End, Sacred Well… These are some of the names for God in Judaism outside of the more familiar Adonai, Elohim and Hashem. What does each of these names mean? How might understanding them more fully contribute to our own evolving spirituality, enriching our lives? Join me in this lunch-and-learn discussion.

Three Thursdays: November 6, 13 and 20, 12:00-1:15 PM

Judea Reform Congregation, 1933 W Cornwallis Rd. Durham, NC 27705

Brown bag lunch

Fee: Choose from $54, $63, $72

Touching the Beloved Within: An Elul Course

to Sep 16

Touching the Beloved Within: An Elul Course

Elul is the month before Rosh Hashanah. According to the Kabbalists, it is a special time in that the energy of the Divine is very close to us, breathing into us new life and possibility. The word Elul itself expresses this sentiment. It is a Hebrew acronym of these words, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine,” (Song of Songs 6:3).

It is during Elul that we look inside. We take account of our lives in preparation for the Ten Days of Awe. This unique month offers us dedicated time for personal inquiry, prayer and practice to help us connect very deeply with the beloved within.

Together in this course we will make compassionate inquiries and discoveries about who we’ve been this year, what we might like to release and what we might like to cultivate in the New Year. We will address this process in four areas:

Week 1: Our relationship with Ourself

Week 2: Our relationship with Others

Week 3: Our relationship with the Planet/Creation

Week 4: Our relationship with Source/the Sacred

Sessions will be held virtually, 6:00 PM – 7:15 PM Eastern* on the following dates:

Tuesdays, August 26, September 2, 9 and 16

*Sessions will be recorded for your convenience.

Fee: Choose from:

Your Omer Journey 5785
Apr
9
to May 25

Your Omer Journey 5785

The 49-day Omer journey is one of the most powerful processes I have ever engaged. It is spiritual, metaphysical, earth-centered and embodied all at once. It is a connection between divinity and earth.

As we conclude our Second Night Seder we begin this count of the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot, preparing us first to meet the Infinite One at Mt. Sinai, then fueling us for the work beyond. This year we need this journey more than ever.

Using Kabbalah’s sefirot - Divine Emanations, Your Omer Journey 5785 is a virtual course to guide us as we walk this path. Through seven gatherings we will deeply explore the sefirah of the week, delving into its mystical and practical applications, preparing us for the energetic opportunities available to us. It will be accompanied by a written guide including embodied, earth-centered, teachings for each day’s practice.

Sessions will be held virtually, 6:00 PM – 7:15 PM Eastern on the following dates:

*Wednesday April 9

Sundays, April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25

*Session 1 will be held early as the Omer counting begins during hag (holiday) on the Second Night of Passover.

Fee: Choose from:

$45, $63, $72

Ferocious Love - A Passover Supplement
Apr

Ferocious Love - A Passover Supplement

This year the theme of Passover is more urgent than ever. The people of our country are experiencing losses of freedom in work, faith, ethnicity, race, sexual and gender orientation, education, freedom for the future of our planet, freedom over our bodies, freedom to vote, even freedom to speak. We must respond to this takeover. We must do it with love and with urgency, with intensity yet kindness, never losing sight of the goal of a world a community of love and care.

I have teamed with Designer + Art Historian Alva Horton to bring you Ferocious Love, to enhance your Passover Seders with the messages of caring for the self and caring for all of creation with passionate goodness.

Ferocious Love is a supplement you can download and print as a companion to your Haggadah.

Fee:

$20.70

Pre-order HERE.

NOTE: Initially you will receive a download link that WILL not be for the supplement. We expect to send the supplement by April 2nd and you will receive it in your email.

Hashkatah/Shavasana
Jan
14
to Feb 25

Hashkatah/Shavasana

Hashkatah is a practice created by the Piasezcner Rebbe in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. As a prisoner and leader, he created this powerful healing mindfulness practice which has a deep capacity for restoring and giving hope. BKS Iyengar taught a different process: a resting practice in the Shavasana pose (at the end of most yoga sessions) that calms and restores. Through experimentation I discovered that blending these two practices offers extraordinary opportunities to heal our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, giving us new choices. Whether you are dealing with trauma, PTSD, or just regular-old stress, this course can offer deep healing and renewal.

Six Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00pm Eastern: January 14, 21, 28, February 11, 18 and 25*

*This is a virtual class. Sessions will be recorded and available to view on your own schedule.
